The Secret of the new private edition from Glenmorangie has been out for a while now: the award winning limited edition of the Scottish Highland distillery is being reissued every year and this time in a very innovative way. The Single Malt is aging in barrels, in which American Rye has previously been stored. Made for experts and admirers of special taste. Inspired by the golden era of American Rye Whiskeys the Glenmorangie Spìos stands out with his finesse and fine spices.

With his rich and full-bodied character the Glenmorangie Spìos (Scottish Gallic for “spice”, pronounced “spie-oss”) is reminiscent of the glorious times of American Rye Whiskey at the beginning of the 20^thcentury. The American Rye Whiskey was famous for its flavor and was rated one of the best beverages at the time. It was used as an inspiration for classic cocktail creations like the Old Fashioned or the Manhattan. But with the spirit of the time the taste preferences changed and the Rye Whiskey was being forgotten.

For the Glenmorangie Spìos, Dr. Lumsden bought the best, only one-time filled oak barrels in Kentucky and brought them literally to the other side of the world. Long before Rye Whiskey had its revival, the hand-picked barrels reached the Glenmorangie distillery in the Scottish Highlands, where over the years the fascinating flavors were being transferred to a pure, smooth Whiskey, that can only be distilled in the special copper pot-stills of Glenmorangie.

To this, Dr. Lumsden explains the following: “I always enjoyed the special flavor of the American Rye Whiskey. I thought the flavors from the barrels, in which it was previously stored would be perfect for our famous, smooth style. And the result is the Glenmorangie Spìos. Fresh herb scents with traces of cherry, clove and green grass touch the nose while tasting. Then the flavor of rye reaches the palate. Caramel, clove and cinnamon are blending together with a creamy vanilla scent to a sweet and lasting aftertaste. I hope that the experts and collectors can appreciate this new innovation from our private edition. A Single Malt that is distinctive to Glenmorangie while still being different.”
